Position: Protection Officer

Based:
Iringa office, with some fieldwork in Ruaha-Rungwa and Kilombero-Udzungwa ecosystems Southern Tanzania Elephant Program (STEP) is a leading conservation organization dedicated to conservation of elephants, habitats and natural resources in the Southern Tanzania region. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as a Protection Officer.The Protection Officer will play a crucial role in managing and coordinating our protection projects in and around designated protected areas.

Responsibilities:
● Manage and coordinate protection projects in and around designated protected areas.
● Oversee grants, budgets, and work plans for forest protection initiatives.
● Coordinate regular ranger patrols with relevant partners and stakeholders.
● Organize workshops and training sessions for rangers, Village Game Scouts, and WMA partners.
● Facilitate the development of long-term conservation strategies and proposals.
● Maintain a GIS database for designated areas.
● Manage and participate in programs using novel conservation technologies (training provided).
● Prepare quarterly and annual reports for projects.
● Contribute to fundraising including grant applications.
● Establish and maintain professional relationships with government authorities, communities, and partner organizations.
● Assist with community benefits assessments and other protection department duties as required.
● Support the Protection Manager and CEO in organizational tasks.

Requirements and Qualifications:
● Minimum of four years of experience in project management, report writing, and team management
● Minimum Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Environmental Science, Conservation, etc.); M.Sc. may be an advantage
● Proficiency in GIS and mapping software, interest in learning other conservation technologies
● Strong organizational and communication skills
● Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
● Passion for wildlife conservation and environmental protection
● Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili
● Willing to be based in Iringa
