Job Opportunity – Health Information Systems (HIS) Software Developer Intern
Location: Dar es Salaam

Background:
The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is engaged in a five-year
Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-Tanzania (CDC-Tanzania) to provide strategic information and health information systems (HIS) technical assistance to the Ministry of Health (MoH) as well as the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and their implementing partners (IPs). We are recruiting an individual through our affiliated international NGO ‘Global Programs’ to serve as a Health Information Systems Developer.

The internship is for 6 months with the possibility of an extension. The position is expected to start on 1st August 2024

Main duties and responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Health Information Systems (HIS) developer, the Intern shall be involved in developing and maintaining software, databases, reports, queries, and other software to support its projects and programs. The intern is expected to design databases to meet the needs of specific projects while maintaining database design standards. Additionally, the developer will work as part of a team in a collaborative environment, contributing to group projects and supporting colleagues to achieve common goals.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Ensure adherence to Agile software development principles by participating in all SCRUM ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning meetings, and other related activities.
  • Work with the HIS team to design software solutions by studying information needs, systems flow, data usage, and work processes while adhering to the software development lifecycle
  • Support the piloting, rollout, training, and maintenance of HIS systems to Implementing Partners
  • Develop and coordinate software system testing and validation procedures, programming, and documentation
  • Prepare reference materials for users by writing operating instructions, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments, and clear code
  • Undertake other tasks within the scope of the role as directed by management

Experience, skills, and minimum required qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in computer science, data science, software engineering, or information systems required. Knowledge and skills with Python and Node.js. Knowledge in Java, C#, PHP, and other common programming languages is an added advantage.
  • Experience using Docker containers for deployment. Using other DevOps tools is an added advantage.
  • Experience using Electron for developing cross-platform desktop applications.
  • Experience developing data-driven applications utilizing significant relational database engines as part of the overall application architecture (experience with the following are highly desirable: MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL). Experience using Git, Restful web services and Agile methodology.
  • Experience in building dashboards using PowerBI, Superset, and other visualization tools is an added advantage.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Swahili.

Other desired skills/qualities:
  • Excellent skills in critical thinking and analysis
  • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team, leveraging strong communication skills to contribute to project planning and problem-solving
